Major retailers including Walmart have site-to-store pick up options, but the service has not been available for online retailers like Amazon — until now. Amazon is piloting a buy online/pick up in store program in a 7-Eleven location in Seattle.
According to published reports, Amazon will put storage lockers in the location where the online orders will be delivered to. When the package arrives at the store, customers will receive an e-mail notification and a barcode on their smartphones. When they go to the 7-Eleven to pick up the package, a scanner on the lockers will scan the barcode and give customers a PIN code to punch in to receive their package.
Amazon is said to be testing the storage lockers in the Seattle location before rolling out a pilot in multiple stores.
