Columbia Unveils Innovations for 2015 Collections

Columbia Sportswear Company's commitment to innovation led to several new collections in the Fall 2015 collection of outerwear, sportswear, and footwear.  Featuring cutting-edge performance technologies and contemporary designs, Columbia's new lines exemplify the company's mission to keep people warm, dry, cool and protected so they can enjoy the outdoors longer, no matter what the weather brings.

As Columbia's team began developing new Fall 15 collection, they were simultaneously designing freestyle ski uniforms for athletes competing in the 2014 Winter Olympics.  Columbia designers met with these world-class athletes and coaches on numerous occasions to gain their insight on fabrics, fit, features and styles.

"The insights and inspiration garnered from working closely with Olympic athletes were too valuable to be left on the podium," said Fred Dennis, general manager of outerwear at Columbia.  "We decided to weave that performance perspective across several new collections, starting off with the new Columbia Titanium collection.  It represents the best of our best."

Columbia Titanium
Designed for consumers who place a premium on performance, style and comfort, Columbia Titanium is a collection of outerwear, sportswear, footwear and accessories constructed with premium fabrics, innovative technologies, and deep feature sets. The collection is the perfect blend of technology, highest quality materials and style that are equally at home jibbing an urban rail, ripping big-mountain lines in the side country, or cold-weather training for a new adventure.

Columbia Titanium will serve as an ongoing technology and innovation platform that will inspire and bring greater value to the broader product line.  This strategy is reflected across the line from the lightweight but feature-heavy First Tracks 860 Jacket to the Heatzone 1000 featuring TurboDown Wave – a revolutionary new insulation construction for Fall ‘15.

TurboDown Wave technology
Columbia's successful TurboDown Performance Enhanced Down inspired a totally new insulation technology that redefines uncompromising warmth. TurboDown Wave is Columbia's innovative patent-pending construction method that essentially eliminates the cold spots where body heat escapes in conventionally constructed insulated jackets.  Rather than creating a traditional seam by sewing the lining and shell together to create the baffle, Columbia developed a unique method of jacket construction by combining 900 fill water-resistant down with Omni-Heat Thermal synthetic insulation. In this advanced construction technology the Omni-Heat Thermal insulation runs through the jacket in a 'wave-like' pattern with the down on both sides throughout the baffles.

Columbia asked an independent third-party entity to test TurboDown Wave's heat-retention capabilities against several competitors' insulated jackets. Using a computer-controlled environmental chamber to regulate variables, Columbia's Heatzone Jacket took on several jackets including The North Face Super Diez Jacket, Arc'teryx Cerium SV, and the Patagonia Fitz Roy. In each case, the Columbia jacket insulated with TurboDown Wave performed better; beating competitors by margins ranging from 3.1F degrees to 9.9F degrees warmer.  Detailed testing results are available upon request.

Vent + OutDry: 360 degrees of ventilation
Columbia is revolutionizing how active people hike in winter months by combining two of the footwear industry's leading innovations.  For the first time ever, Columbia's proprietary Vent construction technology has been combined with its patented OutDry waterproof/breathable technology in several styles.  This is Vent + OutDry and offers 360 degrees of ventilation for breathable temperature regulation.  Available in Fall 15, the counter-intuitive collection includes men's and women's styles like the Ventrailia OutDry and Ventfreak Mid OutDry. Bringing together OutDry and the technical construction of Vent results in the most breathable, waterproof footwear Columbia has ever produced.

Women's performance sportswear: feminine versatility
Columbia will debut a totally new collection of performance sportswear constructed with premium knit fabrics and designed for stylish versatility.  The new line offers feminine, flattering styles while providing a performance, multi-use product appropriate for outdoor, city, and studio.  Ranging from buttery hoodies in soft prints to leggings that provide stretchy comfort in bold prints, the collection will become her go-to pieces no matter what her day has in store.
