By any measure, e-commerce has been a remarkable retail success story. In the past decade, online shopping has moved from the status of a novelty to an everyday consumer activity, and e-commerce has become a key element in virtually all retailers' business plans and strategies.

But if e-commerce has grown quickly, the challenges for e-tailers have kept pace. Many of these challenges are basic to all retailers: acquiring and retaining customers cost-effectively in an age of eroding brand loyalty; gaining a greater share of wallet from customers; and providing the products customers want while keeping the cost of doing so under tight control.
