Forecast: China to Become Second Largest Global Retail Market by 2012

8/1/2008
TNS Retail Forward, a market research firm, forecasts China will attain double-digit retail sales growth during the next five years. The organization also projects that the size of the retail market in the country will eclipse $1.4 trillion by 2012, which would surpass Japan and make it the second-largest retail market in the world, trailing only the United States.

The forecast is outlined in TNS Retail Forward's report entitled "China's Retail Landscape."  The report profiles the country's leading retailers and delivers insights about the Chinese shopper.

"While China's short-term retail outlook is vulnerable because of pressures ranging from inflation to heightened government regulation, the continued entry of new retail banners is evidence that China remains one of the best retail opportunities in the world, with strong growth forecast across retail categories," commented Frank Badillo, a senior economist and manager with TNS Retail Forward.
