Fry’s Electronics quietly ended nearly four decades in business when it shut all 31 stores overnight.

Based in San Jose, CA, Fry's was a family business founded in 1985 as a Silicon Valley retail electronics store to provide a one-stop-shopping environment for the hi-tech professional. The company, which has store in across nine states, posted on its website that it ceased regular operations and began the wind-down process on February 24, 2021.

The retailer wrote that it had made the difficult decision to shut down operations and close permanently as a result of “changes in the retail industry and the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic.”

Fry’s said it “hoped that undertaking the wind-down through this orderly process will reduce costs, avoid additional liabilities, minimize the impact on customers, vendors, landlords and associates, and maximize the value of the company’s assets for its creditors and other stakeholders.”

The retailer is working to arrange for return of equipment being repaired and with consignment vendors needing to pick up their consignment inventory.
