High-Tech Fabric Producer Alcantara Outlines Sustainability Efforts and Achievements

As celebrations, concerts and calls for action commemorate the 45th anniversary of Earth Day around the world, a company from Italy is doing its part to improve the environment.

Andrea Boragno, CEO and chairman of Alcantara, outlined the steps his company is taking to protect the environment at a press briefing at the Embassy of Italy for editors, reporters and bloggers who cover fashion, home interiors and other lifestyle subjects.

Based in Milan, Alcantara manufactures and markets a proprietary high-tech material that is used in the automotive, fashion, home interior and consumer electronics industries.

Under Boragno's stewardship, the company has focused on sustainability and refined its production practices to become one of the first European companies to achieve the designation of "Carbon Neutral" in 2009.

In addition to reducing waste and emissions, Alcantara also closely audits its supply chain, asking its suppliers and partners to respect the universal principles of protecting human rights, working standards, the environment and the fight against corruption.

"We are extremely glad and proud to support such a noble worldwide initiative, aimed at stimulating global action toward a more fair and balanced world," said Boragno. "We also share a strong commitment to sustainability and tackling climate change with the World Bank's Connect4Climate initiative."

While the bulk of its revenue comes from sales to the global automotive industry, Alcantara material is now a top lifestyle choice of fashion designers who strive for unique creativity, innovation, functionality, versatility and sustainability. Alcantara's relationships in the fashion world range from Japanese courtier Yohji Yamamoto, to designer Max Mara to well-known outdoor brand Woolrich.

The company was the first to think in terms of fashion for the car industry, anticipating the trends and crafting personality for the interiors of numerous new models presented at recent motor shows in Paris, Los Angeles, Detroit and elsewhere.

During press days at the Los Angeles Auto Show last November, Alcantara hosted a private VIP fashion show at Vibiana in downtown Los Angeles' historic fashion district, including a display of Lamborghini vehicles equipped with Alcantara.

Attended by fashion designers, opinion leaders and automotive industry executives, the Alcantara event also featured fashions from the collection of award-winning designer Yohji Yamamoto, as well as furniture from Ligne Roset and premier camera products from Leica Cameras AG.

At the Paris Auto Show in October 2014, Alcantara showcased a one-of-a-kind fashion collection by Indian designer Manish Arora as part of the show's Cars & Fashion exhibit.

Alcantara was a major partner of the Global Citizen Earth Day, a free event and major concert on the National Mall April 17-19. The event supported initiatives to end extreme poverty and solve climate change organized and promoted by World Bank's Connect4Climate, the Earth Day Network and the Global Poverty Project. Alcantara erected an Alcantara Magic Garden pavilion near the Washington Monument with the capacity for 50,000 visitors per day.
