Marks & Spencer Drives Business Effectiveness with Cognizant

5/9/2011
Cognizant cited increased activity from its retail clients, including leading U.K. retailer Marks & Spencer, as a key factor contributing to its growth during the first quarter of 2011.

For the division that includes retail, the company achieved 12.7% sequential revenue growth in Q1 "as our retail clients came out of the traditional IT lockdown associated with the fourth quarter holiday season," said Cognizant CEO Francisco D'Souza. This division, which also includes manufacturing and logistics, now represents 20% of Cognizant's total revenue.

Cognizant is seeing increased opportunity in newer service lines such as analytics, business process outsourcing and IT infrastructure services. These lines "collectively represent a market opportunity that's nearly four times larger than our traditional application, development and maintenance market," said D'Souza during a recent conference call.

"As an example, when Marks & Spencer Group, one of the U.K.'s leading retailers, needed to free up investment capital for a multi-year growth strategy, they selected Cognizant to help improve operational efficiencies, drive business effectiveness, and enhance their already superior customer experience," D'Souza added.

The company is increasing its U.S. employee base, doubling its Phoenix, AZ development center to 1,000 people and expanding another U.S. development center, according to COO Gordon Coburn: "We added 1,400 jobs in the U.S. in the first quarter of this year, so we're aggressively expanding here, as well as elsewhere throughout the world," he said.
