Reader's Choice: Top 10 Stories of 2009

Looking back over the past six months, it should come as no surprise that retailers cared the most about other retailer's financial performances. Bankruptcies, store closings and retailers that beat the odds despite the tough economic climate claim more than half the spots on our list of most popular read stories. What else did retailers vote for with their mouse clicks? Find out which stories make the cut of our Top 10 best read stories of 2009.

Not all highly ranked stories were about retail bankruptcies and success stories. A series of highest paid retailers which includes a ranking of the highest paid CEOs, female executives and retail executives across all titles claim three spots on our list. Another story to draw record clicks is a retail crime story.

Here are the Top 10 stories in the first half of 2009:

1. Top 10 Highest Paid Retail CEOs - February 24
RIS evaluated public salary records to compile a list of Top 10 Highest Paid Retail CEO's, many of which come from the biggest names in retailing, such as Wal-Mart, Lowe's, Limited Brands and Target among others.

Struggling retailers may have been virtually forced to give merchandise away in the post-holiday season, but Kohl's, Forever 21, Walgreens and several others are forging ahead with big plans in 2009 based on their recent sales success.

3. Store Closings from 15 More Retailers - February 17
Positive retail sales in January offered a welcome ray of relief for retailers struggling through a difficult winter. But the good news was tempered by many who felt the need to use store closings as a means of cutting costs or filing for bankruptcy protection. The list of stores disappearing from a mall near you includes 15 big retail names like Home Depot, Fortunoff, Talbots, Chico's, Pier 1 and others.
