Retail's Top CIOs Revealed

At the fourth annual CIO of the Year Awards top IT professionals from Luxottica, HSN Inc. and Guitar Center were recognized for top performance over the past year. RIS News announced the winners at the Retail Executive Summit on June 18 at the Grand Del Mar, Del Mar, CA.

Awards were presented in four categories:

Rookie of the Year. Todd Lyche from Guitar Center took home the Rookie of the Year Award. Lyche and the Guitar Center pricing team implemented a pricing intelligence solution to monitor products from competitor websites for exact and similar matched products with accuracy. The solution allows Guitar Center to have real-time visibility into the market and full awareness of the competitive pricing landscape to "right price" to its customers while simultaneously growing margins. The Rookie of the Year Award recognizes a CIO who has made a significant impact on the organization in their first year on the job.
 
Innovation. Michael Braine from Luxottica was named the winner in the Innovation category. Over the past year Braine worked hand in hand with fellow retailers on the development of a retailer/wholesaler management solution which is in the process of being rolled out across Luxottica North America. The solution will significantly streamline processes in these previously siloed business units saving the organization both time and money. The Innovation award is presented to a CIO who implemented an emerging technology that drove ROI through top-line growth, improved customer satisfaction or bottom line savings.
 
Strategic Impact. The award for Strategic Impact went to Karen Etzkorn of HSN Inc. Etzkorn has been pivotal in driving HSN's Boundaryless Retail initiative. Boundaryless Retail looks to form a retail reality that is devoid of artificial barriers, driven by innovation, collaboration and leverages the power of technology to create a frictionless experience for customers. Etzkorn and her team is helping redefine shopping around content, community and commerce — creating the experience with imagery, video and personalization. The Strategic Impact award is given to a CIO that implemented a project that is advancing their company in a new direction, market or channel.
 
Lifetime Achievement. This year RIS News was deeply honored to be able to present this award to long-time retail IT veteran and industry leader Richard Mader. Mader has more than 40 years of experience in retail information management, and has served as SVP and CIO for Boscov’s and Bon-Ton Department Stores, as well as director of corporate systems for Federated Department Stores. He served as executive director of the association for Retail Technology Standards (ARTS) from when it was founded in 1993 through 2012 and is affectionately know as Mr. ARTS. The Lifetime Achievement award is presented to a CIO who has made a long-term impact on an organization and the retail industry as a whole.
