RIS Executive News Brief - December 13, 2005

12/13/2005
Hand-in-Hand to Biometric Domination

Retailers could be doubling their use of biometric technology for employee use and more than quadrupling their use of biometrics for customer payment in the next 18 months, according to the soon-to-be-released RIS News/IHL Consulting Group Store Systems Survey. Employee use is expected to rise up to 18 percent from nine percent and customer use could increase as high as 33 percent from seven percent, according to preliminary findings in the survey titled "The Consumer-Driven Store."

One company is now poised for domination in this fast-rising industry segment. With its acquisition of BioPay, Pay By Touch becomes the largest provider of biometric technology for retailers and ends a year-long patent battle with its now-former rival. On December 6, Pay By Touch announced a definitive agreement to purchase BioPay for $82 million in stock and cash.
