The Supply Chain in 2016: Resource Scarcity, Climate Change to Have Profound Affect on Retail Landscape

7/3/2008
Consulting and technology services firm Capgemini, in cooperation with the Global Commerce Initiative and 22 retail and consumer packaged goods companies, has released its Future Supply Chain 2016 report outlining sustainability challenges in the global supply chain.

Among chief findings: Resource scarcity, climate change and new regulations are just some of the critical issues that will affect the consumer product and retail industry in the coming years.

The report finds that current supply chain designs that are aimed primarily at improving on-shelf availability, reducing cost and supporting sound financials do not effectively take into account new parameters such as CO2 emissions, reduced energy consumption and better traceability. Overcoming these challenges will require companies to embrace a new collaborative model within the value chain.
