30 Top CEOs Make Barron’s List

By Jamie Grill-Goodman - 03/30/2016
Thirty top CEOs made it to Barron's "Profiles of the World’s Best CEOs" list. The profiles provide close-ups of top leaders worldwide, including CEOs from retail companies such as Under Armour, Nike, Amazon, Starbucks, and CVS Health.

Two athletic apparel companies made the list. Kevin Plank, CEO of Under Armour, founded the company 20 years ago in his grandmother’s basement and last year Under Armour rang up almost $4 billion in revenue. Plank focuses on technology in his path to success: Under Armour bought a slew of fitness and nutrition apps in the past three years. Meanwhile, Mark Parker, CEO for Nike, made the list for keeping the No. 1 athletic-footwear brand on a fast growth track. Nike’s revenue doubled to $30 billion, and its stock has risen sixfold under Parker's reign.

Relative newcomer Larry Merlo, CEO of CVS Health since 2011, made the list for transforming the drugstore chain. CVS Health’s earnings per share were growing at a low-single-digit pace when Merlo took over, but since then, investors have enjoyed four straight years of double-digit gains.

The longtime CEO of Starbucks, Howard Schultz, also made the list. The company operates 24,000 stores in 71 countries and is now turning its sites to food, planning to double its food business in five years. It also wants to sell craft beers and specialty foods at night.

The following are the 30 World’s Best CEOs, according to Barron's. Click here for the full Profiles of the World’s Best CEOs.
