Leveraging the Right Workforce

10/8/2013
In a retail management, an accurate schedule starts with an accurate forecast. Family Dollar, a deep discount retailer, realized it was in need of a workforce management solution to address a variety of internal and external issues, including rising labor costs, healthcare coverage changes mandated by the healthcare reform and accelerating performance expectations. With a new solution, the retailer hoped to control labor costs, minimize compliance risk and improve productivity – all of which help improve customer service.

The Right Associate, in the Right Place
To address these challenges, Family Dollar was in search of an integrated time and attendance, as well as a forecasting and scheduling solution to help maintain accuracy in payroll processing for its more than 55,000 associates across 7,000 stores. The retailer turned to Kronos for its solution.

The solution helps Family Dollar analyze its business drivers, producing an accurate labor forecast and providing the insight needed to determine labor needs. Now, the retailer can place the right associates, in the right place, at the right time.

Effective Labor Management
The retailer reached a myriad of benefits by using one, integrated solution for time and attendance, budgeting, forecasting and scheduling.

The completely automated time and attendance solution reduces labor costs by enforcing pay and work rules – consistently and accurately – across the organization. Labor-intensive timecard tracking, data entry, and approval processing are also simplified, reducing the administrative time associated with attendance exceptions and employee inquiries. This also improves customer satisfaction by reducing labor costs, mitigating compliance risk and improving workforce productivity.

Additionally, Kronos helps Family Dollar maintain compliance with federal, state and other labor laws and regulations. For example, the state of California requires employers to comply with complex meal and break rules and the solution enables the retailer to do so through accommodation of multiple pay rules and complete automation processes. Through real-time visibility into labor information, the solution also makes it easier for Family Dollar to have a fair and equitable scheduling process.

One of the key benefits that Kronos provided was the ability to effectively manage the workforce so that the right person can be at the right place at the right time.

“Workforce management is at the core of our long-term success,” said Michael Newman, DVP store operations for Family Dollar. “We have achieved many benefits from the Kronos solution since implementing it in 2010. Employee retention is at our highest levels ever, and customers continue to receive superior service. We couldn’t have achieved any of these without maintaining accuracy in payroll, effective scheduling and precision in labor to demand alignment.”
